Last week I gave my manuscript for Shield of Health to my editor, Tricia Kristufek. Shield of Health is the second book in my Remnants of the Past series. The first book, The Mission is really a book that stands on its own and in a way, Shield of Health stands on its own as well. Even so, the story will continue and come to an end in the third book. I still have to decide on a title for it. The Mission and Shield of Health feel totally different from each other and it’ll be interesting to see how the first two books in the Remnants series will influence the third. All characters in the first and second books carry a lot baggage with them, Remnants of the Past, so to speak. I have even considered that David, or Darkblood, due to everything he has been through, will deal with issues through his life. There will be a new characters and one who will be there for him and watch out for him. What she will learn before the end of the third book was that he was always there for her and that he will give up so much of himself to make sure things fall into place for her.

What I am hoping is that my writing skills have at least improved a little and that Tricia will not have to spend an ungodly amount of time fixing Shield of Health. While she works on my manuscript I am going to be working on a book cover, Hopefully, I will be able to get this book out by Thanksgiving. Who knows? maybe sooner. Regardless before the end of the year and with the help of Tricia Kristufek and the support of my family, I will have a finished product that I hope will stand up to my first book.

There is always that time in between writing books where ideas float around in your head for the next. I have a lot of ideas. I like to let them  coalesce a bit. I have to say though, it is kind of weird, this period where I am not actually writing a story. I find myself asking, What to Do?

Look for Shield of Health to come out in the fall of 2012 and all of the Remnants of the Past series at Amazon, Smashwords, Creatspace and B&N

Vince’s com band created a tingling sensation in his arm, letting him know a call was coming through. He quickly became aggravated with the sensation and wished he could figure out how to make the damn thing just chime or beep. Anything other than the tingling would have been fine. He set his fork down on his tray and raised his wrist up to his mouth. “Yeah, what is it?” he asked, trying to hide the frustration in his voice

Banshee’s voice sounded like it was being transmitted over a cheap toy. She picked up on his frustration. “The tingling thing again, huh?”

Along with her voice, Vince thought he could hear some laughter in the background. “No, Boss. It’s nothing.”

“Grim, I’m going to need you at the weapon’s console.”

“Is there a problem?”

“It’s probably nothing but I think I would like you up here all the same.”

“I’m on my way.” As Vince went to put his tray in the sanitizer his arm tingled once more. “Damn it!” he shouted, trying to rub the sensation from his forearm. He quickly brought his wrist up to his mouth. “What!” This time, the frustration in his voice was unmistakable.

It was Banshee again. “Sorry, Grim. I meant to call someone else.” Not only did she do a poor job of hiding her own laughter but the laughter in the background had been driven to a level of hysteria.

It was then that Vince realized that he was at the butt end of a joke. He took a deep breath to regain his composure. “I’m on my way, Boss.” After closing the channel on the com band, the Grim Reaper made his way toward the bridge.

That was just a little something from Shield of Health, my upcoming novel from the Remnants of the Past series.

So, You like being independent, huh? That’s fine. I have a lot of respect for you. You are a real go getter. Words like Maverick and Ambitious are used to describe people like yourself. You have that get the hell out of my way attitude, you blaze trails, go down your own path, and you are a writer?

Now, you are what we call an Indie. An elite group of many. I am in this group. It is made up of men and women, young and old. We have stories to tell and things to share. Some of us find it easier to connect through our writing and others crave the attention a well written manuscript can bring. Some want fame and others want fortune. The truth is, most of us want it all. Oh come on, admit, you want to write something so fantastic that people will bow down at your feet and beg you for your blessings. Okay, maybe that is a bit much.  Or maybe not. Perhaps some of you have reached stardom and stand among those who are great. I bet some of you even have cleaning services come in and clean your homes for you.

And I’ll tell you what I think about all of you great ones, You independent Mavericks selling books left and right, making money hand over fist and driving cars with names like Bugatti and Ferrari. Oh my God, you all must think the world revolves around you. The sun rises and sets at your beck and call. I bet you stay out all night and sleep til noon. You should all be ashamed, Damn it! You all know damn well that I want to Drive a Bugatti and be filthy rich too. Shame on you for leaving me behind. Now go get me a movie deal for my book, please? No, really I’m not kidding. The Mission would be a great Movie! I would really love to own a Bugatti. I have no objections to someone giving me one. And a Movie Deal too. Your Dear Old Uncle Bill doesn’t ask for too much. Just what he needs. And who doesn’t need a Bugatti, huh? I love Being Independent.

The Mission

It’s a Movie waiting to happen.

Ever picture yourself on the big screen? I have. Not so much acting or anything like that but I have pictured my story on the big screen. Yeah I know, kinda silly but hey, why not? When any of us, Authors and Writers that is, writes anything, it has usually been played out in our heads over and over.  Whether it is action or dialog between character they are scenes that are dramatic and worthy of anyone’s attention. How well we express these scenes is another thing altogether. Sometimes I’ll have an actor or actress playing out the scenes I write. Other times the characters are unique to themselves and they are played out by characters that only your own imagination can come up with. It makes me think that the whole casting process for a movie can be quite interesting.

Well, I just wanted to put some of my thoughts on this out there in front of you. At times I have felt silly for thinking such things but when it comes down to it, we all start out thinking that the piece of fiction or fantasy going through your head is a little ridiculous. But then it becomes a full-blown story that you are trying to push on Amazon or Smashwords. So why not a movie? Why shouldn’t Your Story be on the Big Screen?

I have recently been honored with a Five Star review for The Mission from Tricia Kristufek. Is your Uncle Bill in the mood to party? You bet ya! I have found my way back to the Kristufek house once again. So tip toe on over and slip on in for a little fun and flash fiction with your Dear Old Uncle Bill.

Meet me at the Kristufek House.

As a writer, I drag myself out of bed early, sometimes hours before I have to go to work just to get a couple of pages of something written. Well, it is not always a couple of pages. Sometimes it may only be a couple of paragraphs. Sometimes, the only thing I accomplish is to decide that I didn’t like what I wrote the morning before.

In the past I have been asked about my writing process. Writing process? Process would indicate that there is consistency in what I do but since every story I work on is different, that is kind of impossible. Even the scenarios I create in my stories from chapter to chapter create a kind of chaos that would shoot any real process all to Hell. But if it were consistent, it might be kind of lame. Maybe it is a process; a process of inconsistency.

This weekend, Tomorrow to be exact. Sunday, March 4th I am putting my first published work, The Mission out there as a free download. There was a lot of that chaotic process in this book. I wrote The Mission at 4 in the morning, the afternoons, and the evenings. There is a lot of myself in The Mission and I’m not just talking about the work that I put into writing it. I hope that anyone who downloads my first published work enjoys it.

The writing I do now is the result of a wild imagination that I have had since I was a child. It was always about action or adventure. It was about that imaginary guy driving the Hotwheels car over bridges that were collapsing and making it across just in time to go off to save the day. Or maybe I was flying that model of the Starship Enterprise around the confines of my bedroom and then beaming down to some planet to once again, save the day.

As I got older I would close the book at the end of a chapter and think about how I would proceed. Sometimes the author of the book and I were dead on but most times I found that I was just borrowing the writers characters and taking them on my own adventure, but they were always action adventures. There were television shows that I did this with as well. Batman the Animated Series. There was an episode where a little girls father would visit her nightly. He was gong mad and becoming a danger to her. By the time the episode was over, the Darknight would visit her at her window at night to make sure she was okay. Would you know that as this little girl grew up and fell in love with the Darknight and would eventually give her life to save him? Of course not. But I knew because this was my idea. Perhaps someday I’ll write the story. But it will probably be an action adventure story.

With the encouragement of others in my life, I began to write. Most of the ideas I have had for any story have been action. There is a lot of feeling in action and usually, action worthy of most stories is the result of something really profound taking place. Love has always had its place in action. Love has set the stage for battles. Men will conquer for love, do good and evil as well for love. But even so, I have never let the aspect of love in any of my stories turn that story into a love story. It was never intentional, it is just that my goal has always been to write action adventures in a scifi setting.

Then comes the story I’m working on now. I originally thought it was an action adventure story set in the future. Some of the action scenes are glorious! But there was something about the story that I couldn’t quite figure out, so I just put it aside.  About a year later I had read a novel by Ashley Fontainne and I realized that it was her style of writing that the story needed. She had done a book giveaway for me and worked pretty damn hard to help me promote my book that weekend. I also had the opportunity to see just how much of herself she put into promoting her own work. Afterwards I wanted to thank her for what she had done for me and had no real idea as to how I would do that. The only thing I could think of was to ask her if she would want anything to do with the story idea that I had. I was really surprised when she accepted my offer.

It was after we began to work on the story that Ashley opened my eyes up to what it was we were working on. During her Friday Night Radio Show, while interviewing me, she asked if I would ever consider writing a love story. Even though I didn’t know the answer to that question, she did. Like some clumsy fool tripping over his words I told her that a love story might be possible down the road. Anything is possible! What I didn’t realize for quite a few days after, was that she was talking about our story, Corporate Affair. She knew long before I did that we are already writing one. Even when I came to realize what she was talking about I asked myself, really? Is that what we are writing?

Not that I have anything against writing a Love Story; I’m actually quite excited about writing it! There is a lot of emotion and passion at work here, well of course. I’m just saying that the action in this futuristic thriller or love story, is going to be that much better. With love, there is always much more at stake. One thing I have learned from Ashley, is to know the story you are working on! She is quite an impressive writer. So as of now, I am a co-writer of Romance. But don’t worry, the Queen of Revenge promises to keep this story quite interesting! And you know something? Perhaps that Darknight story that I have wanted to write is really a love story after all. Who knows?

Dear blog, I have been busy writing for quite a few years now. My first story was a learning experience. It was a freakin mess. I loved the story but the way I wrote it was a train wreck in the making. But hey, it was my first story. I will return to it someday and make it right. My second story, the one I published, was also a learning experience but it was much better than the first so I gave it a shot and self published it. My third, I’m feeling pretty good about. It’s actually a prequel to the second story I wrote. Keeping track of all of this? Cause I think I just lost myself back at the first story.

So I’m pretty close to having my third book finished. It deals with characters I have come to know and care about a lot. And I even have ideas for the third book in this series in play. But I feel I need to give it a break for just a while. The thing is, I have some exciting ideas for another story.  And a good friend of mine has been developing the lead character for it. She has done a fantastic job of it as well. her descriptions of Anastasia far exceed what I had imagined her to be. She understands Anastasia far better than I could have ever hoped to.

So, as excited as I am about finishing The Shield of Health and putting it up for sale for all to read, I am just as excited about starting this new project with Ashley Fontainne. When I first published The Mission I never imagined that it would lead to this. In many ways, I am living the dream.

The Mission is the first book in the Remnants of the Past series. In this excerpt from The Mission, I introduce Vince Jacobs AKA Grim Reaper. Vince is one of the lead characters in the second book of the Remnants series. At this point I am calling the book,  Shield of Health and hope to release it in March. It is a prequel to The Mission. I hope you enjoy!

Drenched in sweat, Darkblood woke to the sound of the battle cruiser’s proximity alarm. Legionnaire stood next to the chamber and appeared to have just opened the lid. “Our sensors must have picked something up when we came out of ATS.”

Trying to shake the effects of stasis and the horrific nightmare he was suddenly awakened from, Darkblood sat up in his chamber. “What?” he said, trying to comprehend what Legionnaire was saying.

Legionnaire held his hand out to the young prince and with a tone of severity, he said, “We’ll never do stasis again.”

Darkblood took his hand. “You must have had the same dream that I had,” he said, pulling himself out of the chamber.

Legionnaire appeared disturbed and angry at the same time. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

Darkblood put his feet down on the deck with a sense of urgency. “Have you been to the bridge yet?” he asked loudly, trying to be heard over the sound of the alarm.

Legionnaire let go of his hand. With a raised voice, he said, “No. I just came out of stasis and the alarm was screaming away.”

“This particular alarm goes off when there is a message being transmitted from an emergency beacon,” David informed him as they both left the hibernation room.

When they arrived on the bridge there was an image playing on the view screen. Darkblood hurried to one of the control consoles. The metal grate that made up the floor clanked under his feet with each stride. Legionnaire remained by the hatchway to the bridge. Looking up at the viewer he immediately recognized Grim Reaper.

Vince Jacobs had not only been a member of the Undead but was also the head of an organization called the Shield of Health. The organization dealt with health related issues throughout the Solar Empire.

Legionnaire was still trying to shake the effects of the stasis chamber and became aggravated when he couldn’t understand what Vince was saying. “Can we do something about the noise?” he shouted.

Darkblood used the keyboard at one of the auxiliary consoles and began typing the command to silence the alarms. “I’m on it!” he yelled. At that very moment the alarms went silent, leaving only the audio from Vince’s message.

After Jonas had released the virus into Avexia’s atmosphere, Vince Jacobs did everything possible to prevent it from spreading. It was a battle he would quickly lose. As the head of the largest health organization on the planet, Vince did manage to convince the senate to put Avexia under quarantine. The Avexia Space Agency immediately sent beacons into orbit and began broadcasting Grim Reaper’s warning of death into the cold darkness of space.

Yeah, That is me, Indie Author Bill Talcott. A while back a friend of mine was doing a live Radio Interview and told me I should try to set myself up with one as well. I remember telling Ms. Ashley Fontainne that I was just way too shy. So what does she do? She gets herself a gig as a Radio Host! I have to hand it to her, she is one busy woman! Well, to go on with my story, Ms. Fontainne asked me to be her first guest.  It was an honor to be asked by such a fantastic Author to be on her first Radio Show. So as shy as I might be, I jumped at the chance.

Join Ms. Ashley Fontainne as she makes her debut as a Radio Host interviewing Yours Truly! Friday, February the 10th 9:00pm cst  blogtalkradio
